Transitioning from military to civilian life can be tough and finding a job can be even more daunting but there are more and more fields that are welcoming veterans with open arms. Flexible jobs are a great way to ease back into civilian work and obtain a greater work-life balance for military veterans.
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be a difficult time and trying to find a job during it all, can be overwhelming. In fact, the unemployment rate is higher than the civilian rate, but there are some industries that are a better fit for military veterans transitioning.
The railroad industry is increasingly looking at hiring veterans.
Monster.com just posted an article on how the Rail Industry is exceeding hiring expirations and veterans should look into jobs in that industry.
According to the Association of American Railroads, over the last two years the major fright railroads have hired over 45,000 people, including an estimated 9,900 who have served in the military.
“The demand for moving freight by rail will continue to grow, and railroads are looking for good people to help them serve customers and power the nation’s economy. We’re proud to say that history has shown us how the skills, dedication and discipline possessed by men and women in the military make them a perfect fit for railroading,” said AAR President and CEO Edward R. Hamberger.
The industry continues to exceed hiring expectations thanks to the White House Joining Forces Program. Nearly 25 percent of all new railroad hires have some type of military experience and that rate continues to grow exceeding the 2012 commitment.
Of the railroad companies, Union Pacific is the top-veteran friendly company for 2015. UP employs nearly 10,000 veterans and is looking to increase that number. “Their familiarity with safety sensitive operating environments and unparalleled work ethic translates very well to the railroad. As we seek to fulfill increasing hiring needs, we will continue to recruit transitioning military service members to join the Union Pacific team,” said Jamie Herbert, assistant vice president — Union Pacific Human Resources.
UP has hired 1,425 military veterans which makes up approximately 28 percent of all new hires in 2014. 20 percent of UP’s workforce is veterans.
Veterans who are looking to join the transportation industry have a high chance of landing a job and an even better chance when applying to Union Pacific. The industry continues to grow as America’s economy bounces back and more jobs are created with the growth.
Today, all major railroads are hiring across the country, from diesel mechanics to train conductors there are plenty of jobs to choose from.
